• The truly frustrating aspect of the film is how it feels like a propaganda piece. The white men in the film have some layers to their personalities, but none of the Chinese characters in the film are real humans – they are robotically fatalist and patriotic and would in fact do anything for their country including giving up their lives.

  • What works for the film is how unhinged Kroc is and the way he is presented as a straightforward asshole. There is absolutely no gray area at all – Kroc is the very definition of an opportunist spineless businessman as we go through a series of montages containing his rapid-fire business dealings.

  • With Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed both performing a belly flop Hollywood has blown its chances of turning video game movies into a mainstream genre. Suddenly the prospects for Alicia Vikander’s Lara Croft movie don’t look too good.

  • It’s sure predictable but the finale that predictably includes every underdog getting a chance to shine will leave you with the guilty giggles of having enjoyed something you generally wouldn’t. If you have kids you should take them to the theater to see Sing – they will love you for it – especially since they were probably horrified by the number of deaths in the new Star Wars movie. If you’re lucky enough to find a screen playing the film in 2D, choose that one over the 3D.

  • The experience can be a little frustrating since the campiness and risqué material is supposed to be part of the comedic routine, and all you get is a ‘sanitised’ version of what is supposed to play on the screens. It would be better to wait for the DVD and watch it sloshed with your friends for the full experience.

  • Ultimately if you’re looking for footage of Beckinsale looking really classy in black leather go and see the film at the earliest, if you’re looking for an entertaining film you’ll need to look elsewhere.

  • The back and forth between Maui and Moana is of course the highlight of the film, and it’s a predictably sweet and emotional bond between the two. Anyone watching the film will be able to connect with at least one of these two characters and there’s always something to take away and learn from them.

  • I’m not sure which section of audiences the film was made for, but if you get time to see it later on DVD I suggest you give it a spin just to know the reveal, which in my humble opinion gives the ludicrous reveal of 2009’s Orphan a run for its money.

  • The first thing you’ll notice, of course, is how smart the film is. Unlike in movies like this year’s terrible Independence Day Resurgence there is a very real depiction of how the world would react if aliens did show up at our doorstep. It’s also nice to see characters that don’t make stupid decisions when things don’t go according to plan.

  • The titular beasts themselves are imaginative and fascinating, and how Scamander is connected to the beasts is an interesting commentary on how humans treat something they are not aware of in a negative manner. When the film isn’t dark and scary it’s also quite funny which is a breath of fresh air from the persistent gloom and doom of the previous four films.
