The film takes a promising premise and fails to realize its potential because it’s trying too hard to be cool. I’m going with two out of five for writer-director Alankrita Shrivastava’s Turning 30. I think I can safely say I wouldn’t want to meet a girl like Naina when she’s nearing 40!

But ‘Turning 30’ soon turns from a warm, welcome peek into that girl’s life, a girl we are prepared to like, into a series of clichés. It’s almost like the script went looking for every single line that goes with the territory and stacks them up, one after another.

A laughable mess, this Turning 30!!!. Maybe if it wasn’t in English, it could perhaps have salvaged some credibility. Then again, the only thing it shows us is that Gul can curse a helluva lot better than Rani Mukerji [ Images ] did last week.

At the end of the film, I wondered: if turning 30 is so devastating, where does that leave us 40-year-olds. I’m going with two stars.

Turning 30 is more of a monotonous look on midlife-crisis than a coming-of-age cinema.

If you were excited about an Indian chick flick or rom-com, this is hardly it. Turning 30, with its weak dialogues, forced narrative and unoriginal storyline, fails to entertain. Give this one a miss.

On the whole, Turning 30!!! may not do too well commercially but it is a well-made film for the multiplex-going city-based audience. Better promotion would’ve helped.

Overall, the Turning 30 soundtrack is an interesting affair, it’s definitely one of those soundtracks that are part of this burgeoning wave of indie-rock, and genre-bending music ushered in by Amit Trivedi. However, this album definitely holds it’s own and is worth a listen on a club night or night in too!
