It is also Nolan's best work to date. It deserves to be the film that defines him. As a feat of pure adaptation, Nolan has achieved something I admittedly thought was near impossible.

It's a maddening watch. Any promising idea leads to a dead end. Mercy eventually reaches the conclusion that its chosen dystopia would actually be fine with some minor improvements—quite the conclusion to come to for a film about capital punishment.
