Annapoorani

Despite its imperfect politics and occasional logical fallacies, Annapoorani makes for a refreshing watch, reminiscent of the wholesome, slice-of-life Tamil films before the era of big guns, ear-shattering explosions, and blood spill. Nayanthara is the soul of Annapoorani, skillfully embodying the range that the character demands.

While the premise of Annapoorani is filled with a lot of promise, the film falters in delivering the goods even when it sticks to the template. The biggest problem with Annapoorani is the good ideas not getting past the finish line, ending up making audiences say 'Nalla irukku… but semmaya illa' (it's okay, but not excellent).

While 'Annapoorani' has all the right intentions, it is crammed with too many ideas which are never fleshed out. There's a random women-card sequence, a forced message on interreligious faith and a women empowerment angle as well. 'Annapoorani' could have been more delectable had it focused on selected ideas instead of feeling the need to force-feed messages on many topics.

Debutant Nilesh Krishnaa's film is filled with many heartfelt, well-intentioned ideas that are neither cooked to our heart's content nor have the consistency or presentation to see through the perfect meal it so desperately wishes to be. The ideas are appetising but the film is not delectable. Annapoorani is ample if you're hungry and looking for a small kiosk to snack. If you're too keen on consistency and an appetizing presentation, there's little it has to offer you.
