Asterix: The Mansions Of The Gods Reviews

6

Astier, Clichy and crew have - in terms of renderings and dialogues - stayed very faithful to Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo's beloved characters and have dished out something that is both briskly-paced as well as entertaining enough for its core audience, children. This one makes for some fairly delightful viewing.

What you get is a likeable product that in no way matches up to it's comic-book counterpart. And that's truly sad, really!

...despite its appeal and lovability, the film misses to add depth and gravitas to a full-on Asterix Adventure.

Those unfamiliar with the comics may just find some of the relentless action and the new track of a Roman child amusing enough. But die-hard fans will rage at the rewrites to the story, the pedestrian dialogue and childish gags. Like Caesar’s efforts to conquer Gaul, the attempt to tame Asterix for the screen has proved futile yet again.

The film finds a nice mix between comedic antics and outright social commentary. It captures the staunchly irreverent spirit of the books, with the movie giving much of its focus to the overall buffoonery of the residents of its absurd version of history.Old, young, whatever age: everyone should watch this one.
