As a movie buff for real, I like mindless masala entertainers and I absolutely have no problem with melodrama. As long as storytelling is precise and performances appealing, as long as the direction has been done in an intact way, I'm happy. But the film which I find to be terribly overrated is the so-called nineties 'class-eek!' Hum Saath Saath Hain. I fell in love with the ways in which Suraj Barjatya promises us quality fun when I watched Hum Aapke Hain Koun...? because there was Salman, there was Madhuri and there was family. Karishma Kapoor has always been my personal favourite. And so has been Sonali Bendre. Bhai to matlab... puchhne ki baat hai? But still, the film was just too much invested in draping silk sarees and velvet suits to its characters that it failed to provide some grip to the filmmaking. Barjatya will adapt Ramayana on the screens someday- I was freakin' sure of it, but this was such a disaster. No detail was paid to the priceless story it decided to adpat. Family, love, family, chudails- the only things this film blabbers on. And when the song 'Janmon ke saathi, hum saath-saath hain...' plays, although making for a super good title track, I was just breathless, just like Amisha Patel of Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage. The principal problem of the film was that it became largely an opportunity wasted- there is Tabu, Karishma and Salman here: oh there is Alok Nath here, but the film didn't put them to a good use.
