Critic consensus

What 8 critics are saying

Critics are divided on James, with most acknowledging that its value lies primarily in being a final showcase for the late Puneeth Rajkumar rather than in its storytelling. The film's slick action sequences, lavish production values, and Puneeth's commanding screen presence drew consistent praise. However, several critics pointed to a clichéd drug-mafia plot, heavy-handed direction, and a clunky narrative as significant weaknesses. The consensus is that the film works as an emotional tribute to its star but falls short as a standalone thriller.

  1. Ottplay

    Film review

Is James a great film - not by any length, but it will go down the annals of history as one of the biggest Kannada hits, purely because of an outpouring of love for its late leading man, Puneeth Rajkumar. The Power Star is in supreme form in the action sequences, and this is also a film in which the Power Star perhaps looked his absolute best, especially physically.
  2. Times Of India

    Film review

James is the perfect treat eventually for people who want to cheer, hoot, whistle and even dance along with Puneeth in his true massy avatar on the big screen for one last time. The stylish presentation, slick action sequences and the extremely big ensemble cast ensure that the film has enough and more to keep them glued.
  3. New Indian Express

    Film review

All in all, James definitely is a worthy tribute to the Power Star, and when the final credits roll, and we see Puneeth give us his muchloved smile, it brings a tear to our eyes. The film is lavish and comes with rich production qualities, though it suffers from a cliched plot of the drug mafia.
  4. India Today

    Film review ·

James is Puneeth Rajkumar's swan song and a fitting tribute. Director Chethan Kumar's James starring late actor Puneeth Rajkumar, Sarath Kumar and Priya Anand is a stylish thriller.
  5. Firstpost

    Film review ·

Look at James as an individual film, and you will most likely be disappointed. But see it for what it is, a people coming together to celebrate Rajkumar's large yet short life, and you will be moved to tears like I was.
  6. Indian Express

    Film review ·

The action-thriller has people lining up to watch their idol do what he did best on the screen, one last time. One can't escape the strong sense of melancholy that comes with the knowledge that it will be the last time one would see Puneeth dance, fight, smile, cry and deliver punchlines.
  7. Film Companion

    Film review

Watching Chethan Kumar's film, you know why Puneeth set great store by it. It's one of the better star vehicles to emerge in Kannada, and has its heart in the right place. The technical crew has worked its heart out for the film.
  8. The News Minute

    Film review ·

James may appear tad cliched for some but it shines through as a sincere ode to the legacy of Puneeth Rajkumar and his ever-growing fandom. Despite the clunky setting and the heavy-handedness with which Chethan Kumar & Co. go about things, Puneeth Rajkumar doesn't seem out of place in any frame and masters equal control over action, comedy and raw emotion.
