Critic consensus

What 6 critics are saying

Critical reception for Mukundan Unni Associates leans broadly positive, with reviewers consistently admiring its visual inventiveness, the strength of its central character, and the decision to treat morally dark material with unapologetic dark humor. Vineeth Sreenivasan's performance as the unscrupulous protagonist drew particular notice, and debut director Abhinav Sunder Nayak's stylistic choices were widely seen as purposeful rather than ornamental. The main reservation, raised by at least one critic, is that the subjective narration-heavy structure grows tedious and that the film fails to generate the tension its healthcare scam premise could have provided. Several reviewers also noted the film is niche by design, likely to alienate audiences who prefer conventional storytelling.

    Film review

On the whole, the subjective storytelling adapted in the film has not worked well. The movie keeps reminding one of Amelie, with its music style and narration. Though the story opens to a big scam that's happening in the health sector, it does not give one the chills and thrills, a thriller could give or the joy that watching a movie would provide. Instead, it getting boring with Mukundan Unni narrating every aspect of the movie.

If you're a glass-half-full person, it's easy to think of this as an indulgent exercise. But if you're a cynic, chances are you'll find the film highly enjoyable and oddly comforting. When you have a brilliantly conceived character like Mukundan Unni, it's like the film can just keep writing itself around him.

If you are a sucker for wacky unapologetic stuff, then Mukundan Unni Associates from debutant Abhinav Sunder Nayak is a dark comedy that will surely work for you. Mukundan Unni Associates definitely belong to the "not everyone's cup of tea" category. But if it is your cup of tea, then it is "the" tea.
  4. New Indian Express

    Film review ·

Abhinav Sunder Nayak's Mukundan Unni Associates is also the most visually inventive film since Thallumaala. It puts as much thought into the presentation as it does the performances. One can find the protagonist's actions disagreeable and still watch it as an unapologetic and amusing portrait of the character.
  5. The Hindu

Yet, all of these acts — which in another movie might have been treated in a dark, sombre mood — gets an uproariously humorous treatment by film editor-turned-director Abhinav Sunder Nayak and co-writer Vimal Gopalakrishnan. It is a choice that conveys the theme more effectively. In the end, Mukundan Unni Associates does become a biting commentary on the many who have made it big through nefarious ways.
  6. The News Minute

    Film review ·

Vineeth Sreenivasan is unrecognisable as he plays this most cunning man with zero feelings for anyone other than himself. The film, which stands out in more ways than one, is the debut of editor Abhinav Sunder Nayak as director. But Mukundan Unni Associates tops everything, it is his film from the first scene to the last.
