The Gorge

What The Gorge does supply is a novel science-fiction premise and some captivating bursts of suspense. There was potential for this mysterious action romp to be something more special – a keeper, even. But we'll take what we can get: at least it's one of the grabbier films to land on Apple TV+ this side of the pandemic.

The Gorge is a solid sci-fi action flick that Apple really should have sent to theaters.

The Gorge isn't as intelligent as a movie like this ought to be, though there's only so much that actors of Teller and Taylor-Joy's calibre can do, but after a point, you begin to wonder if Derrickson and writer Zach Dean have more to say beyond the obvious. What you're left with is a movie that is immensely enjoyable, but only in stops and starts.

The Gorge is a slickly made but increasingly dumb Apple mockbuster where Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy flirt over an abyss full of creatures. Both actors are in full autopilot mode, flatly flirting with such lack of passion it feels awkward, and the film bears too much of that synthetic Apple feel, as if it was primarily made to show off the abilities of a new iPhone.
