The movie keeps getting tangled in a complicated web of its own making, one that feels all too familiar after several decades of superhero cinema sucking up the cultural oxygen. Calling this Brand New Day feels like a cosmic joke. It's the same old MCU B.S., coasting by on the considerable charm of its two resident stars and a legacy of good will. There's nothing new here whatsoever.

Timothée Chalamet has played troubadours and sociopaths, chocolatiers and cannibals, messiah figures and broken-hearted boy-wonders. You wouldn't think a motormouth jerk who's really the Michael Jordan of ping-pong would be a bespoke role for the star, yet the role fits him like a customized backless jumpsuit. It's the sort of performance that feels like early Pacino or Dustin Hoffman, all twitches and vibrations and seeming like he's in a constant state of motion even when standing still.

Boyle and Garland's trip back to this hellscape makes the most of casting a jaundiced, bloodshot eye at our current moment. Their inaugural imagining of a world torn asunder surfed the post-millennial fear that modern society wasn't equipped to handle something truly catastrophic. This new movie is blessed with the knowledge that something always rises from the ashes, but that the risk of regressing back to some fabricated mythology of a Golden Age is there on the surface as well.

A Minecraft Movie is essentially a 101-minute version of that [endless ribbing, nudging, winking knowingness]. It, too, is pitching a product, and you either buy what it's selling in the name of making bucks off of fandom and star power, or you don't. We just don't want to be the one to inform God what his creations hath wrought with this expensively cheap, 100-percent corporate mess.

This Snow White may not be the worst live-action adaptation of an animated touchstone, though it's a strong contender for the blandest. The whole thing feels so bland and perfunctory to a fault that it's surprising to think that this was the movie that caused such an uproar for nearly two years and a dozen news cycles.
