Smartly taking it all in a more mature, much darker direction, Cretton, with the help of a crackerjack screenplay, has expertly crafted a Spidey flick that returns the character to his roots as a NYC crimefighter. With production elements that are top of the line, including stunning cinematography from Brett Pawlak, this is indeed a Brand New Day in the cinematic incarnation of Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a blockbuster. It will appeal to the young and the old alike, to girls and guys, to the masses as well as the classes, and to the audience in 'A', 'B' and 'C' class centres.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is one of the best superhero movies in years. Only, this one is better. And more than that, I want to talk about how the end of this movie made me feel, because it has been some time since a superhero movie made me feel much of anything.

Unfortunately, while the former moments are executed excellently, the film mishandles a major part of the narrative, leaving it feeling surprisingly ordinary for one of Marvel's flagship heroes. The biggest disappointment lies in the film's primary antagonist played by Sadie Sink. Although the character draws quite a bit from established comic material, the adaptation rarely expands beyond those foundations.

This has been an extremely successful and unrelentingly bland sub-franchise within the MCU; Destin Daniel Cretton does little more than Jon Watts to impose any kind of personality on the latest instalment. Yet, this remains a series without any kind of edge. It's almost Faustian that Marvel's blandest series is money in the bank as long as it remains unchallenging.

The movie keeps getting tangled in a complicated web of its own making, one that feels all too familiar after several decades of superhero cinema sucking up the cultural oxygen. Calling this Brand New Day feels like a cosmic joke. It's the same old MCU B.S., coasting by on the considerable charm of its two resident stars and a legacy of good will. There's nothing new here whatsoever.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day, helmed by Short Term 12 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton, the studio finally seems to have come to terms with the exhaustion from multiversal slop. Holland delivers his richest performance since joining the MCU because the writing finally retires Peter from his long-running side hustle as Kevin Feige's most reliable diplomatic envoy between competing corners of the Marvel Universe, and restores him to the centre of his own story. That alone feels refreshingly old-fashioned.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day reins all that in to find a more introspective Peter Parker in emotionally bruised isolation following his self-sacrificial decision to save the world by erasing its memory of him. The entertaining new entry has the good sense to stop banging on about the damn multiverse. Instead, it foregrounds the humanity that has always been Spidey's greatest strength — with an extra dash of angst.
