Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn't remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter Parker he may not have the power to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see.

Critic Consensus

Spider-Man: Brand New Day receives a broadly positive reception, with the majority of critics praising Tom Holland's richest MCU performance and the film's decision to strip away multiverse spectacle in favour of an intimate, emotionally grounded story centred on Peter Parker. Several reviewers highlight it as among the strongest entries in the franchise, applauding its balance of heart, humour, and action under Destin Daniel Cretton's direction. Dissenting voices, however, point to a weak primary antagonist — with Sadie Sink's villain seen as underdeveloped — and a persistent sense of stylistic blandness that has characterised the sub-franchise throughout. A handful of critics note that while the film is entertaining and well-crafted, it falls short of being a definitive Spider-Man outing.

"While the 30-year-old Tom Holland who began this a decade ago can still pass as just-past-teens, the Marvel franchise shows a tear in its spandex."

"High on emotion, humour and heroism SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY is less multiverse, more heart."

"The script can only be described as extremely well-structured: its form seemed so complex that I was compelled to revisit the film to grasp its paradoxical simplicity! Destin Daniel Cretton's direction is cerebral with total grip, amazingly in sync with both the action and the emotions, and his exquisite handling of the actors brilliantly supplements his complete masterful vision."

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day is an emotional, grounded superhero film led by a stellar Tom Holland. It delivers heart, hope and action, making it a worthy big-screen watch. No, this may not be the greatest Spider-Man film ever made. But it is undoubtedly one of the franchise's most heartfelt entries."

"The mask fits Tom Holland better than ever. The film shifts focus from multiverse spectacle to solitude, consequence and sacrifice."

"The sequel doubles down on Spider-Man's powers and humanity, delivering the franchise's most intimate chapter yet, with Tom Holland's evolution driving an introspective narrative that balances action with character depth."

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a solid return for Marvel and a much-needed boost for the MCU. It may not be perfect, but its story, exciting action and Tom Holland's impressive performance make it a satisfying superhero film."

"By putting Peter Parker back at the heart of the story, Spider-Man: Brand New Day delivers the MCU's strongest Spider-Man film yet. A good Spider-Man movie only has to get the Peter Parker aspect right, and the rest falls into place. That's where Spider-Man: Brand New Day is not just a winner, but also the best Spider-Man movie made in the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a blockbuster. It will appeal to the young and the old alike, to girls and guys, to the masses as well as the classes, and to the audience in 'A', 'B' and 'C' class centres."

"Unfortunately, while the former moments are executed excellently, the film mishandles a major part of the narrative, leaving it feeling surprisingly ordinary for one of Marvel's flagship heroes. The biggest disappointment lies in the film's primary antagonist played by Sadie Sink. Although the character draws quite a bit from established comic material, the adaptation rarely expands beyond those foundations."

"This has been an extremely successful and unrelentingly bland sub-franchise within the MCU; Destin Daniel Cretton does little more than Jon Watts to impose any kind of personality on the latest instalment. Yet, this remains a series without any kind of edge. It's almost Faustian that Marvel's blandest series is money in the bank as long as it remains unchallenging."

"With Spider-Man: Brand New Day, helmed by Short Term 12 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton, the studio finally seems to have come to terms with the exhaustion from multiversal slop. Holland delivers his richest performance since joining the MCU because the writing finally retires Peter from his long-running side hustle as Kevin Feige's most reliable diplomatic envoy between competing corners of the Marvel Universe, and restores him to the centre of his own story. That alone feels refreshingly old-fashioned."

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day is one of the best superhero movies in years. Only, this one is better. And more than that, I want to talk about how the end of this movie made me feel, because it has been some time since a superhero movie made me feel much of anything."
