Johnson Thomas's Film Reviews
-
Over populated, largely superficial and gory mayhem…David Harbour’s performance lacks the confident stamp of authority that Ron Perlman’s did. Even the other main characters don’t have smooth enough arcs. The narrative jumps from one plot point to another without acquiring much coherence
-
Though the narrative blast lasts around 113 mins, it feels too lengthy and other than in its climactic moments, there’s hardly any adrenaline rush to be had here. The formula happens to have lost its edge and the screenplay by Christina Hodson can do little to improve the nature of emotional distention here. Hailee Steinfeld does lend some empathy to her role but it’s all too capricious to amount to anything heart-tugging!
-
The film has some stunning imagery but most of the action feels random and incoherent. The narrative is overlong in its desire to include every embellishment possible
-
An anti-hero from the Marvel comic-book universe gets a Superhero makeover in this spanking new origin story with a cliched plot, blobby effects and messy action
-
It’s an experience that veers to off-putting and may not develop the kind of excitement this film hopes to generate!
-
The dark seriousness of ‘Batman Vs Superman’ may have taken its toll I guess. The few engaging moments here and Gal Gadot, aren’t able to lift this nearly incoherent, noisy and short-fused experience to gratifying. This may not be a ‘Suicide Squad’ but it’s certainly no ‘Avengers’ either!
-
The story-telling isn’t smart enough to hold anyone’s attention and the animation specs are so over-indulgent that you just don’t feel enamoured by it. The voicing also sounds put-on and fake. It’s all a harmless bit of fluff … but there’s just no fun in it!
-
There’s really nothing spectacular, sustaining or memorable about the catastrophes designed here. There’s not much acting to be had, either. Gerard Butler may be able to save the White house from disaster but the world?
-
American assassin is a compulsively badass, brutal, emotionally vacant actioner that leaves you gasping at the heavy-duty carnage and mayhem poured into what is largely a generic action thriller. If you are the type who thinks ‘rivers of blood’ make a movie more thrilling then this one will certainly make you sit up and take notice!
-
But for the charismatic turns by Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson and to some extent Salma Hayek, this one would have been just as imminently forgettable as countless other odd-couple buddy comedy copycat films we have been subjected to in the past.
