Piyasree Dasgupta's Film Reviews

Raman’s greatest crime in Main Aur Charles is perhaps this. He took a real-life story almost tailormade to transform into a gripping thriller and turned it into what is at best a documentary on 70’s fashion.

Mean, macho Ranbir Kapoor may bore you to death…

This Dabangg version of Nana Patekar is deadly boring…

It’s difficult to pick what is Roy’s greatest achievements. But somewhere near the top of the list is the fact that director Vikramjit Singh has managed to make a film that has two of Bollywood’s most goodlooking heroes, and leave a woman stalking random people’s honeymoon pictures on Facebook mobile. To quote Kapoor in Roy, “Yeh kahani aisay khatam hogi, mein nahin janta tha.”

Parineeti Chopra, Aditya Roy Kapur’s film is so not delicious…

…Ek Villain is potentially one of the funniest films of the year.

To watch Dhoom:3, you have to get rid of the expectations that are raised in most average human beings suffering from an illness called common sense. Once that is out of the way, Dhoom:3 is rather easy to appetise. It’s easy to believe that Abhishekh Bachchan, who looks as fit and flexible as a pillow, can do a somersault in mid-air, punch a man and get back to his seat on a bike. It’s also easy to believe that Uday Chopra has great degrees of self respect, yet he agrees to appear in Dhoom films.

In a time when noir has been defined by visceral works like Gangs of Wasseypur or a trippy Shanghai, Ram Leela is almost like that chick-flick pretending to be noir, or a noir killed by its secret wish to be a romantic musical. For all its beauty, it’s a baffling film.

Satyagraha is an exercise in extreme self obsession. Because Prakash Jha just doesn’t want the film to end! It goes on and on till you start hallucinating Ajay Devgn’s moustache as a sinister, blood sucking alien and Amitabh Bachchan starts looking like a mummified pharaoh.

Raanjhanaa is no Yuva, and it’s definitely not a Rang De Basanti. What it possibly could be is a list of what not to do for Kejriwal if he wants to survive politics.
