The Sheep Detectives
2026 · Telegraph
The Sheep Detectives is a profoundly odd viewing experience – entirely pleasant, lightly funny and easily absorbed, yet every so often you find yourself thinking hang on a minute, I am watching a flock of sheep investigate a murder, and feel like you are having a stroke. It's a marshmallowy all-age confection, as fluffy as its ovine protagonists, even if some aspects are likely to elicit a species-appropriate meh-eh-eh-eh-eh.

Disclosure Day
2026 · Telegraph · Jun 2026
His latest – a conspiracy thriller in which Emily Blunt and Josh O'Connor try to blow the lid off a 70-year-old UFO cover-up – is a rare attempt to pull off those two modes at once, and regrettably ends up bungling both. The result feels oddly empty and, for all its surface-level convolutions, derivative, too: like Men in Black without the jokes.

Project Hail Mary
2026 · Telegraph · Mar 2026
Gosling is enormous fun in his first solo starring role on this scale, and his character's plight is made all the more tangible because the film itself is so extraordinarily tactile. Excellent practical and optical effects are used in lieu of flashy computer graphics – there must also be plenty of CG in the mix, but you can't tell where – while gorgeous visual textures are everywhere.

Avatar: Fire and Ash
2025 · Telegraph · Dec 2025
James Cameron's semi-amphibious sci-fi franchise is back, with a new chapter even longer, more humourless and cheesily colour-coordinated than the last. That the franchise has already sunk to repeating itself in its third part does not inspire much confidence in the two still to come. Some of us saw a while ago that turning Avatar into a franchise would prove to be a creative cul-de-sac.

TRON: Ares
2025 · Telegraph · Oct 2025
The American film with the most unfortunate title in Britain since Our Souls At Night is a balloonishly pompous science-fiction smashathon... Ares makes an even less persuasive job of this than its predecessor, largely because its one good idea comes buried under two hours of bloated and un-absorbing non-plot, populated by some of the most aggressively charmless characters seen in a blockbuster since the Star Wars prequels.

28 Years Later
2025 · Telegraph · Jun 2025
This transfixingly nasty, shrewdly postponed sequel to 2002's 28 Days Later finds a knot of survivors ensconced on the island of Lindisfarne where the otherwise endemic Rage virus has yet to reach. It stands as his finest film since 2008's Slumdog Millionaire.

Mickey 17
2025 · Telegraph · Feb 2025
Mickey 17 is a markedly original sci-fi satire that defies easy categorization—a $100m boisterous film that neither belongs to a franchise nor cares to start one. Much like its unlikely hero, in a sea of similarity, it's a sparky one-off that will appeal to anyone longing for the sort of sui generis romp a cinematic 'universe' could never allow itself to get away with.
