Emperor Vs. Sarat Chandra
The narrative feels muddled and chaotic in its opening 30 minutes, as the film jumps between its historical and fictional tracks without giving the audience enough time to settle into either. Once the film finds its footing, the experience becomes considerably easier, and its central conflict begins to emerge more clearly. Emperor vs Sarat Chandra is at its most interesting when it examines the uncomfortable space between admiration and disagreement, and the question of whether an artiste can expect solidarity from those they look up to.
