With his latest film, "Sinners," he shows off the rewards of that devil's bargain. It's an ambitious, involving original drama of the Jim Crow South, drenched in Delta blues and humid with sexual heat. But it's also a vampire movie, full of fangs, gore and garlic, and it's there where Mr. Coogler falters.
