Critic consensus

What 5 critics are saying

Critical reception for Bison Kaalamaadan is broadly positive, with reviewers recognizing it as a politically sharp, ambitious work that blends multiple genres — sports drama, biopic, and social actioner — into a cohesive whole. Critics consistently praised Mari Selvaraj's direction and the film's thematic defiance, with several noting Dhruv Vikram's performance as a standout. The most common reservation is that the film represents a softening or commercialization of Selvaraj's typically uncompromising style, making it his most conventionally accessible work to date. A few critics also acknowledged familiar or flawed storytelling elements beneath the film's ambition.

  2. Indian Express

    Film review

Bison is a quintessential Mari Selvaraj film, albeit one slightly softened for the masses. Yet, Bison stands tall among his works, a fierce, deeply felt story powered by a career-defining performance from Dhruv Vikram.

  5. The Hindu

    Film review ·

It's a politically sharp and tonally strong drama that is also his most commercially conventional work yet. It's not every Friday that multiple genres blend this seamlessly, and Bison fuses elements of a sports drama, a biopic, a social actioner, and a gangster saga into a singular experience. Mari Selvaraj has long immortalised his name as a rare game-changer.
