• …for a generation that has heard nothing except cheap imitations, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar is a pleasant introduction to the brilliance of R D Burman. A word of caution here: while Mahadevan has come up trumps with his novel idea of making a retro musical, he might have set a terrible precedent. Just like Bally Sagoo remixed Chura liya and opened the floodgates for three million R D Burman clones, there is a danger that this film might prompt filmmakers and music directors to start pilfering old hits at random.

Director Anant Mahadevan has extracted decent performances from the main cast, but how one wishes he would’ve concentrated on making the love stories engrossing. The best part of the film, however, is its finale, but the song ‘Yaadon Ki Baraat’ was just not needed at that juncture.

  • The film, although an experimental attempt, fails to impress due to a strong dose of mush. Besides, the performances by the film’s cast (barring Namrata) are plain mediocre. In a nutshell, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar is an average film with four different love stories. And at least one of them is likely to pull strings at heart.

Debutante director Anant Mahadevan undoing is trying to substitute a strong script with eight pretty faces and seven mast numbers. If you can discount these flaws and focus on the positively exhilarating music – everything from O Haseena Zulfowali to Gum Hai Kisike and Yaadon Ki Baraat – and can appreciate some slim waists and zit-free cheeks, you’ve got your time and money’s worth.
