When Gadar was released on June 15, 2001, the filmmakers and seasoned film critics had no idea that the film, which was set during a turbulent time in modern Indian and Pakistani history, would create box-office history. Made for 18.5 crore , Gadar has made more than 286 Crore to date and, after its theatrical run, was commercially the most successful movie in India when it was released. Set in 1947, during the Partition of India, the film tells the story of a truck driver, Tara Singh (Sunny Deol), a Jatt Sikh, who falls in love with a Muslim girl, Sakina (Amisha Patel), belonging to an aristocratic family.
