Jo & Jo

Jo and Jo works even when you separate the jokes. One finds much delight in watching the laidback banter between such naturally gifted actors as Naslen, Mathew and Melvin. A great time at the movies.

Malayalam cinema has been churning out superhits in the young-adult genre with films such as Thaneer Mathan Dinangal and Super Sharanya, and Jo & Jo could easily be the latest. With great comedy, performances and music, the film is sure to appeal to the youth audience.

The film is themed on a little tapped subject – that of sibling rivalry, as opposed to the love of an 'ettan' or 'chechi' shown in many Malayalam films – but ends up being an amateur, unimpressive attempt that offers very little of the entertainment the promos had promised. Bad use of music, untimely comedy, jerky scenes all make for some really amateur making. The script had promise, but it doesn't quite deliver.

The sibling drama, which is an entertaining and often honest portrayal of the teenage frustration, fun and friendship during the lockdown days, makes one wish that they keep squabbling with each other on-screen. The film can also be a good two hours ten minutes well-spent if what you are looking for is an entertainer with sibling rivalry at its centre.

The entire movie gets a treatment similar to that of some light-hearted web series, but not all of the attempted jokes land effectively. Jo & Jo has a few laugh-out-loud moments, yet one processes them as standalone skits, because the movie as a whole fails to create any impact.
