Kadaisi Vivasayi

Kadaisi Vivasayi is a deeply philosophical film that uses the story of the last farmer in a village to explore profound questions about meaning, inheritance, and spiritual transcendence. Manikandan's direction and the subtle, heartwarming performance by non-professional actor Nallandi create a meditation on what it means to live a meaningful life in an age of information and materialism.

There have been a spate of Tamil films espousing the cause of farming and farmers in recent times, but unlike in those films, in which the theme came across as virtual signalling, in Kadaisi Vivasayi, the intention feels pure. And yet, for all the filmmaking delights that the film offers, something seems to be missing in Kadaisi Vivasayi that stops it from being a truly great film.

Director Manikandan's Kadaisi Vivasayi is a moving tale about the last farmer in a village. Septuagenarian Mayaandi is the soul of the film while Vijay Sethupathi and Yogi Babu play supporting roles.

Manikandan's film is appropriately moving but it also infuses humour to keep the treatment mostly light-hearted, giving it the treatment of a satire in some parts. Kadaisi Vivasayi stands testimonial to the fact that even a simple story, when told with unparalleled sensitivity, can leave a lasting impact.
