Critic consensus

What 9 critics are saying

Critics broadly responded well to Maaveeran, praising director Madonne Ashwin for blending fantasy, comedy, and social commentary — specifically around slum resettlement policies — into an accessible commercial entertainer. Sivakarthikeyan's performance, the screenplay's humour, and the action choreography were frequently highlighted. The most common reservation was a sluggish, repetitive second half that dilutes the momentum built in the first. Most critics felt the film's strengths were sufficient to carry it through its weaker stretches.

  1. Firstpost

    Film review ·

Director Madonne Ashwin has taken a simple story of a man finding courage during dark times and made it into a comedy that left the theatre echoing rousing cheers and loud laughter.
  2. Cinema Express

    Film review ·

It's a time in our cinema when talented filmmakers like Madonne Ashwin are showing that they are unafraid of punching up. This film asks questions of slum resettlement policies and how they are executed, while not losing sight of being an accessible entertainer... there's so much to like—including how the voice-overs are never allowed to get tedious or monotonous—that I have no hesitation forgiving it for the lapses.
  3. India Today

    Film review ·

'Maaveeran' is easily one of the best-made films of this year so far. It is also interesting to see the hero play a coward as opposed to a man with superhero powers. 'Maaveeran' is yet another solid entertainer that makes you enjoy and retrospect.
  4. Ottplay

    Film review ·

Madonne Ashwin's Maaveeran is laced with a gripping screenplay, hilarious one-liners, mass moments and some fantastic performances. In short, Maaveeran is a delight to watch.
  5. The News Minute

    Film review ·

The simplicity of the idea is brilliant, and Ashwin succeeds in executing it with only a few bumps along the way. Sivakarthikeyan has certainly grown as an actor, and the action choreography in the film is its highlight. The pacing of the second half feels slow, with the premise starting to feel repetitive, but there is enough going on in Maaveeran to keep you invested till the end.
  6. Indian Express

    Film review

While Mandela had a lot going for it, Maaveeran turns out to be basic with respect to its story. Madonne Ashwin has settled for a straightforward film with the idea that could have been so much more than Maaveeran. Despite all such brilliance that's realised towards the end of the film, in retrospect, the excruciating wait one has to endure to get there does leave a bit of a bad aftertaste.
  7. Times Of India

    Film review ·

Like in his debut film, Mandela, Madonne Ashwin mixes humour and social commentary to great effect in Maaveeran, which has a plot that is fairly routine, that is enlivened by its fantasy element. While the first half moves along at a fast clip with entertaining moments that make us break into a smile every now and then, the film's momentum slips up in the latter half. Despite losing some of its punch, the film remains engaging till the end.
  8. OnManorama

    Film review ·

Maaveeran is an immensely captivating and enjoyable film, which can arguably be seen as Sivakarthikeyan's comeback in Tamil cinema. Madonna Ashwin effectively combines elements of fantasy, comedy, action, and timely social commentary that fascinates audiences, keeping them engaged throughout.
  9. The Hindu

    Film review ·

Not every Friday do you get the satisfaction of stepping out of a through-and-through entertainer that leaves you with nuggets of afterthoughts after engaging you for more than two hours, attempts a political-superhero film that is rooted in its milieu, and does all of this while underplaying or subverting the conventional tropes while also appeasing the commercial cinema audience. Maaveeran ticks all these boxes.
