Minions & Monsters

Anyone familiar with the franchise will know that the thing with the minions is that they are always looking for the Most Evil Person In The Universe to take orders from. And this film is at its most scattered when they set out doing just that.

The film uses that rise and fall to tell a warm story about dreams, friendship and loyalty.

The overall tone remains as juvenile as ever. It is goofy and giggly and resolutely wedded to stupidity. There's little attempt to add much depth to the story, in the way that Pixar might try to — it is essentially, once again, just a series of contrived opportunities for the little guys to get up to chaotic mischief.

Brainrot is probably the internet's favourite word right now. Anything that defies logic or common sense is instantly labelled as such. And then comes a film like Minions & Monsters. Where do you even begin? How do you review something that's designed to be completely senseless, chaotic, yet somehow entertaining in the silliest way imaginable?

Minions & Monsters entertains with its cinematic nostalgia baits, even if it never quite escapes the franchise's familiar storytelling flaws. While the Minions continue to be funny and these films keep minting money at the box office, the yellow critters still lack the main character energy needed to sustain a feature. The films built around them struggle to deliver a compelling emotional arc that goes beyond making you laugh every few minutes.

This Minions installment is more bananas than belly laughs.
