In this frenetically empty sequel, cluttered with pinballing animated extraterrestrial varmints, the most cartoonish performance comes from a member of the human cast. Two Jim Carreys, each of them turning every individual line of dialogue into an extravagant pantomime of gurning and grandstanding, is categorically one too many.

Carrey's Dr Robotnik is the best thing in elaborate third-instalment shenanigans that are pretty good fan-service fun. While no one could deny the cash-grab fan-service underpinning to the entire project … well, it's actually a not unenjoyable experience. Without him, this film could have been a lot, lot worse.
