This latest Pixar animation is a frenzied exploration of an idea that could have been told ever so simply, with not much humour or a catchy song or two to lift it. Somewhere along all that digging, the film loses sight of its central message.

Pixar's latest isn't trying to hide its various influences. Instead, this buoyant, freewheeling adventure wears its references for all to see. After the heavy-handed "Elio" misfire, "Hoppers" might still feel fairly distant from the heights of peak Pixar; It's also a big, joyful leap in the right direction.

'Hoppers' is Pixar's freshest, funniest movie in years, blending the spectacle of 'Avatar' with an endearing cast of beavers in a film that stands among the studio's best in recent memory.

Hops lightly through big themes, with plenty of laughs. Hop to the theatre for animated creatures and the playful energy that will appeal to younger viewers.
