Critic consensus

What 8 critics are saying

Critical reception for Whalefall is decidedly mixed, with reviewers split between admiration for its audacious premise and frustration with its execution. The film's visuals, visceral underwater sequences, and Austin Abrams' lead performance earn consistent praise across positive reviews. However, a recurring complaint is that the emotional material — particularly the father-son dynamic — is handled too heavy-handedly, with several critics noting that the film over-explains its metaphors and struggles to balance survival thrills with family drama. A few detractors find the overall experience too overstretched and tonally disjointed to fully succeed.

It's not that dire as that sounds, but it is not much better either. The story's arc, sadly, is not that convincing, neither Mitt's nor Jay's, with the women in their lives ignored to the point that it is criminal.
  2. Hindustan Times

    Film review

With stunning visuals, some brilliant performances, and amazing camera work, Whalefall is the genre-bending surprise of this fall that reminds you of what cinema can truly achieve. Austin Abrams is the star of the show, managing to reel the audience in with just his grunts and screams at times. But what truly separates the film from being just another survival thriller is how it blends the story of Jay and Mitt's relationship and estrangement with the central escape.
  3. India Today

    Film review

Whalefall is an unusual, often gripping film that makes a meal of an outrageous premise. It occasionally gets carried away with its own symbolism, but Abrams' performance and the visceral underwater sequences keep it afloat.
  4. MoneyControl

    Film review

'Whalefall' turns an outrageous survival premise into a claustrophobic thriller, but its troubled father-son drama often gets in the way. The story struggles to balance physical danger with family baggage.

    Film review

If only it had held its breath a little longer and resisted the urge to explain so much, Whalefall could have been a knockout. The emotional material becomes increasingly heavy-handed, with the film pushing its father-son themes so insistently that the metaphor begins to announce itself.
  6. IndieWire

    Film review

For all its spiritual ambitions, "Whalefall" rarely lets you forget that its protagonist is inside an animal — and that's mostly to the film's benefit. Even when the metaphor is painfully on the nose, the film's most disturbing images are more than their dramatic limitations and a whale is still an astonishing place to spend a movie.

There are many reasons to enjoy Whalefall, from the grand visuals to the sheer audacity of execution and the none-too-delicate underpinning of love and forgiveness.
  8. TheGuardian

    Film review

It's a setup that's grabby enough to have us wonder just how the hell it's going to play out but it just doesn't work as a 106-minute adventure, too overstretched and too silly to have us rooting for his escape and caring how he might orchestrate it. Flipping between a family drama of soul-searching and hackneyed advice-giving and the more immediate 4DX-suited rush of thrashing, squelching, splashing and panicking makes Whalefall a disorienting and frustrating experience, like someone switching channels without your permission.
