Johnson Thomas's Film Reviews
-
Todd Phillips attempt is to give this film a ‘Hangover’ sort of burlesque and he succeeds partly- unfortunately that kind of treatment takes away from the purity of the true story. And that’s a pity really.
-
With its old school story-telling charm, uncluttered plotting, magical CGI and restrained performances, this film comes as fantastically alive as is possible for a fantasy to get.
-
There’s really nothing new in it other than what modern technology can bring. The story’s eventual outcome – a lesson in repentance, is lost in the visual bombast designed in overkill.
-
This is not meant to be serious stuff. It’s a harmless, reasonably enjoyable outing if you’re not expecting too much from it!
-
This is a messy mash-up that has neither style nor real substance to make it exciting enough. For sure this is nowhere near as cool or nihilistically humorous as ‘Deadpool.’
-
While the action is racy and propulsive, it does feel a little far-fetched and fanciful. Ultimately it’s Matt alone who is top draw here. His sheer personification of Jason Bourne leaves little room for others to emulate. But for him this film would have been a ‘Legacy’ re-run!
-
The spectacle of BFG’s world is imaginative enough but the story doesn’t really grow on you and the build-up is entirely botched. While this is not a bad movie by a lesser director’s standards, it just does not live up to the standards set by Steven Spielberg (during his heyday) himself.
-
The sight gags are funny enough, the writing though is pretty much pedestrian and the exaggerations are obviously not intended to be mean or hurtful to either sex.
So just take it in like it is (mindless entertainer)…if you care! -
The atmosphere here is suggestively creepy. Dark frames, dim flickering lights, sudden switch on and offs, striking sounds delivered suddenly, shadowed faces and faces shrouded in darkness and the general lame tricks that shore up the genres myriad affectations. They are all so obvious and predetermined that you can’t help but feel cheated by the déjà vu surrounding the experience.
-
With the climactic sequence pumping up the action and destruction, you are quite guaranteed a swell experience – especially since it’s quite bloodless and catering largely to boyish fantasies.
