The first film focused on bringing the group together, while this sequel makes audiences understand why the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ are such a big deal on a cosmic level. The repercussions of their actions here will be felt on a much grander scale, setting up Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the process. Needless to say, it’s an absolutely essential and thoroughly enjoyable spectacle to watch!

There’s much to enjoy when cars are flying around the screen, even if logic takes flight with them. Some of the sequences are absolutely preposterous but make for such a dazzling display of destruction, they allow you to appreciate the sheer audacity of the filmmakers to even conjure them up! Traditional for big-budget films today, the plot leaves room for yet another outing, although at this point one wonders how much gas is left in the tank of this franchise.

Combined with seamless CGI work, this is a stunning film to watch in IMAX 3D, one that can probably be enjoyed by an audience unaware of its origins. Fans of that cult classic however, will find this merely a decorative ‘shell’ of its former self.

Returning to a directorial capacity after 16 years, Rahul Bose recognizes the beauty in simplicity and uses it to the film’s advantage. Grounded performances combined with stirring music elevate this relatively straightforward tale, making it essential viewing not only for the young Indian woman, but for anyone looking to scale great heights against all odds.

Combined with good special effects and inventive cinematography to keep the action claustrophobic (do not miss the opening sequence), ‘Life’ does little to change the scope of the genre. However, it is a tautly wound thriller with some gruesome and unpredictable twists to keep you on the edge of your seat, and occasionally even jumping out of it.

‘Split’ immerses you into the chilling world of its characters as they descend into their individual versions of hell.

One does not simply walk in to a Vin Diesel movie expecting compelling storytelling and thoughtful cinema, and although ‘xXx’ exists in an alternate reality where the laws of physics simply don’t apply, there are enough crowd-pleasing moments to distract you from a predictable plot and departure from logic. That said, the movie has enough star power to perform well enough, particularly in Asian markets, to ensure yet another insane outing soon.

Hollywood’s current obsession with franchise-building might act as a consolation for fans of the game series who might take a leap of faith in a better constructed sequel. Meanwhile, ‘Assassin’s Creed’ becomes another exercise in squandering the considerable talents of its cast and crew.

The massive ‘Star Wars’ universe has enough on and off-screen content for fans to chew on, so this prequel/ sequel feels unnecessary at first. Sitting between the 3rd and 4th titles of the series, ‘Rogue One’ manages to undo some of the glaring issues of episodes I to III, while building even more intrigue for the original trilogy IV, V & VI. In fact, it is now a great starting point for someone new to this franchise. To quote one of the familiar lines from this space opera – “the Force is strong with this one”!

Watch it, but unless you’d like to get fired, or even arrested for criminal behavior, don’t follow its examples at your upcoming office party.
