R.M. Vijayakar's Film Reviews
-
This mix of old-world family drama told in a new-age way with contemporary and young nuances does hit the right chords off and on, but overall, the script changes graph jerkily in the second half just when we feel things are trekking back to course slowly for the harangued characters.

This one’s definitely worth a watch for addicts of slick thrillers, and the flaws are not so serious in the larger picture. For Reshammiya fans, this is a bonanza, as he lords it as an actor, singer and composer.

Despite all its flaws, however, “Jai Gangaajal,” as we leave the hall, turns out to be an engaging one-time watch, and, when we empathize so much with the good characters, we realize that the film does make inroads into our heart. Lack of brevity and the flaws might deter the film from getting its due, and that could have been avoided.

Mehta creates visuals, moments and lines that stay with you, and he stays loyal to his subject but does not seemingly care for more than a niche audience.

With this film, if one goes to watch it with an open mind when we consider all the recent offerings from the Deols since “Gadar-Ek Prem Katha,” Deol breaks the barrier from dated to contemporary effortlessly — and very effectively. After all, from the ‘80s onwards, we could call him the original He-Man!

“Saala Khadoos” has all the ‘givens’ in a sports film—it has the usual story of the triumph of the underdog thanks to an impassioned coach, spotlights sports politics, defeat, humiliation, demoralization and finally the triumph of not only merit over politics, but also the protagonist and the teacher.

This one makes last week’s “Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3” look not-so-intolerable, as it is the last word in how not to make a sex comedy. In fact, unless you are not impressionable, you could be put off by the word that precedes the word comedy above, so distasteful is the whole affair!

The flaws are glaring, and the pace, even for about 50 minutes post-interval, is too long and flaccid. The climax is remarkably tame and made so simplistically that it’s plain silly!
