The whole globe trotting hero assassin aspect seems more silly than fascinating here — making it feel like a trashy book you grab at an airport and throw it away when you land. Considering the film is based on a series of novels, that may be precisely what the filmmakers were going for — to make a forgettable film.

American assassin is a compulsively badass, brutal, emotionally vacant actioner that leaves you gasping at the heavy-duty carnage and mayhem poured into what is largely a generic action thriller. If you are the type who thinks ‘rivers of blood’ make a movie more thrilling then this one will certainly make you sit up and take notice!

A better film would have done something with the fact that the man Mitch and Hurley end up fighting is a product of the very system that sets people like them out into the world, to ask no questions and do all the bidding. However, American Assassin has little time for such ruminations…

A band of terrorists, a lone ranger, a nuclear conspiracy — all of it goes nowhere, and takes a long time getting there.

Do not expect anything from this one, you’ll get back on your face if you do. If, after all of the explanation, you still want to watch the film go ahead and let me know if you disagree.

‘American Assassin’ is no different from what we’ve seen before in the likes of ‘John Wick’ and ‘Jason Bourne’, but at least it’s captivating enough to keep you entertained throughout its runtime. You’d probably suffer from a serious case of deja vu through it, but if you need a fix of nail-biting action, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth.
