Dilwali Diwali

On the whole, DILWALI DIWALI is a sweet, amusing and relatable family entertainer. However, the film's biggest drawback is its shockingly short 61-minute runtime. With a longer runtime and better-developed situations, the film could have made a far stronger impact.

While the premise is relatable, the writing remains fairly superficial. With a runtime of just 61 minutes, the narrative moves too quickly, leaving little room for its characters or emotional conflicts to breathe. Dilwali Diwali delivers a familiar reminder that home is not defined by square footage, but by the people, memories and relationships that make it special, though its predictable writing and rushed narrative limit its emotional impact.

A little more messiness, a little more honesty and a little less insistence on being heartwarming could have made Dilwali Diwali a far more affecting film. The storytelling feels too neat and convenient, and the film often feels like an extended television commercial where emotions don't grow naturally.

The truncated length doesn't do justice to the themes of Ritu Mago's screenplay: gentrification forced down the throats of people who prefer bustling and noisy neighbourhoods; an aspiration for higher living standards that is not shared by every family member; insecurity over mingling with a superior economic class. Whatever there is in Dilwali Diwali remains at the level of promise.
