Inside Out 2

In telling simply how there are all these emotions within us, and that it is up to us to make of it what we will, Inside Out 2 is a winner.

The pressure to belong to a winning team leads to a panic-attack sequence as moving, and visually inventive, as anything in those impeccable Pixar spin-offs Toy Story 2 and 3. Kelsey Mann's fizzily ambitious epic deserves to buck that trend. Is it a must-see? Oui oui.

Pixar's obsession with universality leads to 'Inside Out 2,' which feels more like a corporate spreadsheet than a glimpse into a real person's brain.

Inside Out 2's answer is not to try to outsmart its predecessor but to continue and mature its emotional journey. This is probably its best film since Coco, and best sequel since Toy Story 3.

There are some laughs, but it sees the teen transition in terms of a moral crisis, of abandoning and then reclaiming the niceness of childhood innocence; it's a little bit convoluted and repetitive and, in its sanitised, Disneyfied way, this film can't quite bring itself to mention the most important new teen emotion of all.
