Kattalan

Atmospheric and technically impressive, Kattalan mistakes relentless intensity and myth-making for emotional depth and narrative weight. By the time the climax arrives, the violence has stopped feeling shocking and started feeling repetitive. The film wants its men to feel mythic, but mythology without interiority eventually starts feeling like posture.

All roar, little soul in this emotionally flat film

Kattalan is all style, little substance. The film presents a stylised tale of elephant tusk smugglers caught in a power struggle, but the pan-Indian approach weakens what could have been a promising thriller.

Kattalan serves as definitive proof that no amount of electrifying background score and slow motion can create mass appeal that isn't already present in the script. Most moments in the movie feel as though they were designed solely with the intention of being cut into short reels for social media, and the film suffers from a complete lack of substantive writing and character development.

Kattalan tries to roar like Marco with blood-soaked violence and mass swagger, but ends up as a noisy, identity-less actioner with little bite. Kattalan is simply a dull, identity-less action film that lumbers from one fight scene to another without rhythm, coherence or even technical finesse.
