Critic consensus

What 11 critics are saying

Critics are divided on King of Kotha, with the majority finding it a stylistically ambitious but narratively hollow gangster drama. Dulquer Salmaan's performance, the cinematography, and the music are the most consistently noted strengths across reviews. However, critics widely fault the film for an overstretched runtime, a predictable and uneven script, and a failure to develop the emotional or narrative depth needed to elevate it beyond surface-level spectacle. Several reviewers felt the film had the ingredients for something more substantial but could not follow through.

  1. Ottplay

    Film review ·

King of Kotha might have a familiar storyline that feels stretched out in parts, but Dulquer's performance along with the grand visuals make this gangster revenge saga worth watching in theatres.
  2. Indian Express

    Film review

Though the Dulquer Salmaan-starrer possessed the potential to be celebrated alongside iconic gangster movies like Satya, Vada Chennai, and Gangs of Wasseypur, its failure to feature a compelling narrative prevents it from reaching the lofty heights.
  3. Times Of India

    Film review ·

Overall, 'King of Kotha' suffers from the same old problem of not knowing how much is too much. Short of becoming a cult gangster classic, it does have the mass appeal and the ability to hold its audience captive for a long time. It just doesn't know when to stop.
  4. India Today

    Film review ·

Director Abhilash Joshiy's 'King of Kotha' is a gangster drama that suffers from predictability. The Dulquer Salmaan-starrer stands tall because of its music and cinematography.
  5. News18

    Film review ·

King of Kotha has a nice plot, but an over-ambitious scripting pushes it in a multitude of paths with the cream of it all turning sour. The narrative is uneven, and direction not quite up to the mark.
  6. Firstpost

    Film review ·

The film as a whole, however, has left me disappointed because here is a film that could have gone big with its bromance and noir treatment, but all we experienced was shallow mass moments, and scenes strung together to make a passable story. If the film had as much of an emotional depth as Dulquer Salmaan's one dialogue that explains his love for Aishwarya Lekshmi's Thara — we would have probably had a winner.
  7. The Week

    Film review ·

However, the stylised action and mindless violence, on their own, fail to compensate for the film's weak storyline and script. King of Kotha falls short in delivering a more substantial and grander action spectacle than what was presented in the first two acts, and despite Kallarackal's commendable performance, the character of the villain in KoK remains somewhat lacklustre.
  8. KoiMoi

    Film review

All said and done, this Dulquer Salmaan starrer is no Beeshma Parwam! It's bad*ss, has enough style but lacks the essential substance that binds everything else together. A missed opportunity!
  9. Film Companion

    Film review ·

With the freshness limited to the visuals and the music department, the moments of high King Of Kotha achieve quickly deflate just when you feel the film has done its job. Sadly, there's only so much you can do with daggers and swagger when the runtime is close to three hours.
  10. OnManorama

    Film review

With 'King of Kotha,' Abhilash Joshiy has shown he is quite capable of handling action without compromising too much on quality content. 'King of Kotha' is not just a mass flick, but a film that does have an interesting storyline. Though the film gets a little predictable towards the end, the filmmakers have tried to steer clear from sticking to the old formula of mass action films.
  11. The Hindu

    Film review ·

King of Kotha, in the end, is an unabashed vehicle for Dulquer's superstardom aspirations, but it does not pack enough of a punch to become the crowning glory that it was intended to be. The script does have its moments, but such delicate touches that can add depth to a regular gangster flick are absent elsewhere in the film.
