Meesaya Murukku 2

Meesaya Murukku 2 does not have the same freshness or mass appeal as the first film. Yet, it has its own identity through its Gaana backdrop, music and three-generation story. Still, Meesaya Murukku 2 remains a decent and watchable musical entertainer.

For much of its running time, Meesaya Murukku 2 hardly feels compelling. The film's premise isn't as convincing or impactful because gana is pretty much mainstream music these days. While the film knows exactly what its target audience wants and delivers a fun theatrical experience, it tends to disguise ideology as universal wisdom and oversimplify complex issues.

The promising start gets deviated completely in the first half that is filled with silly humour and boring love track is thankfully saved by the latter, that focuses on the story with nice emotional blocks and the whole theme is so inspiring. MEESAYA MURUKKU 2 - Takes an important subject based on music that convinces with an engaging second half.

Meesaya Murukku 2 deserves plaudits for speaking up for artists without a background and pointing out how the independent scene is becoming increasingly corporatised, defeating its very purpose. But it forces this conflict into a simplistic hero-villain template, pitting Carnatic music against Gaana and Hiphop, as though the latter are merely contemporary alternatives to an older tradition, rather than musical forms with their own histories, traditions and evolving identities.

The film has an interesting premise but remains disappointingly hollow.

Somewhere in the pursuit of packing all these elements into what essentially is a rise of the underdog story, Meesaya Murukku 2 falters. For a film that tries to make a point about a discriminative system present in the music industry that shuts the door on individuals from marginalised backgrounds, Meesaya Murukku needed far more grip on direction and story arc.
