Critic consensus

What 8 critics are saying

Critics are divided on Mrs., with most acknowledging it as a competent and emotionally affecting portrait of systemic patriarchy in a traditional household, elevated by Sanya Malhotra's performance and sensitive storytelling. Praise centers on the film's ability to communicate the quiet oppression of domestic life without resorting to melodrama. However, several critics note that its Bollywood polish and close fidelity to The Great Indian Kitchen blunt the rawness and radicalism of the source material, making it feel predictable and overly sanitized. Those unfamiliar with the original may find it more impactful than those who aren't.

This is just the kind of film, with a clutch of effective performances and important messaging, which should be made mandatory viewing for couples. Still, and especially for those who haven't watched the original, Mrs has enough merit.

Mrs. gets as close to being a home run as a replication of a critically acclaimed, widely viewed film still fresh in public memory can be. Although shorn significantly of the compellingly and unsettlingly raw edge of the original, the Jio Studios and Baweja Studios production streaming on Zee5 makes its point forcefully enough not to be a wasted adaptation.

Mrs succeeds in riling you up for all the right reasons. And without resorting to high-pitched drama. Sanya Malhotra, always on the top of her game, steers clear of comparisons and gives her own poignant, 'prime number' spin to the portrayal.

    Film review ·

Mrs is an unsettling reflection of a reality many women silently endure, making it an important watch. While it may not fully capture the unfiltered rawness of The Great Indian Kitchen, it still delivers a gut-wrenching portrayal of systemic patriarchy. With its powerful performances and poignant storytelling, Mrs compels audiences to confront uncomfortable truths—urging not just empathy, but introspection and change.
  5. Times Of India

    Film review

Watch it for its affecting, potent and provocative storytelling which drives home the subtle, everyday complexities of a woman's life with remarkable sensitivity.

Mrs. is too faithful a remake... the Bollywood sheen, texture and overall voice in Mrs. is so overwhelming and complete, one can pretty accurately predict where each scene is headed. Despite not being subtle at all, somehow Mrs still manages to subdue its own rebellion.

Glossy and pretty to look at, and with a better-appointed kitchen too, the remake does well to stick with the original's unsparing attack on a traditional household. While the radicalness of the original conceit is watered down, Mrs communicates the reality behind delicious hand-churned meals and elaborate preparations.
