Mihir Fadnavis's Film Reviews
-
Ultimately it’s a story of hope and redemption, and on a simplistic level, it works. It’s not the best movie, but it’s harmless and well acted for sure. Given Gyllenhaal’s physical transformation for the role, a better-written movie would have been more worthy.

Sometimes, the case isn’t the point, but the man in charge of the case is, and as a character drama ‘Mr Holmes succeeds as one of the best of the year.
-
The film’s biggest achievement is headlining the effect fame can have on someone not prepared to become a celebrity. Ultimately Amy was just a girl who could belt out powerful songs, she was not ready for a starry public image. The film also paints a pretty gruesome picture of drug addiction, but it does it in a way where you understand why most celebs get hooked on to them, and you’re doubly sure never to do them. Kapadia was hailed as the next big thing with ‘Senna’, and now with ‘Amy’ he has well and truly arrived.

The element of surprise is gone, but there sure is fun in the familiarity. There’s only so many times you’ll giggle at the Minions cutely saying ‘banana’. Ultimately it’s harmless fun, and the kids will surely enjoy it, so it becomes an easy watch and an even easier recommendation.

What really makes the film work is that it is, at its heart, a fast-paced adventure, fuelled by themes of questing and redemption. Prabhas is exceptional as the lead, hulking yet charming. Rana Daggubati is perfectly cast as the villain, his performance layered with subtlety and nuance.

…could surely have been a smarter film, but it’s fun enough, and it’s for everyone. And luckily it’s not in 3D.

Avinash Arun’s incredible debut film explores unusual themes delicately and expertly — the frustration of not belonging, the search for home, the weight of loss, the frustrations of single-parenting. In one scene, Chinmay sets off in a boat, out to the vastness of the sea, letting his mind slowly still and take in the beauty before him. Viewers of Killa can expect a similar experience.

If horror whets your appetite you can hardly go wrong with ‘Insidious: Chapter 3’ – it’s not often that a good horror film hits theaters, so make the most of it.
-
Cleverly, the film’s central plot involves an incident that pretty much everyone has to go through once in life, so it becomes very easy to relate to the movie and moisten a few hankies watching it, remembering your own version of the incident. Going with the message of the film, it also makes you realize no matter how manly you claim to be, it’s okay to shed a tear or two when a movie is powerful enough to bring out your most emotional childhood memory. The whole thing is inventive, eye popping and an emotional roller coaster ride from start to end. Go see it, preferably in 2D.

Nargis Fakhri is passable but not noticeable as such, but with McCarthy hogging the limelight steamrolling everything else in the movie down, it’s hard to complain. If you’re in need of laughs in this horrible rain, ‘Spy’ delivers with style.
