Vikrant Massey's performance is the most consistently highlighted element, with multiple reviewers calling it his career best and several suggesting it warrants a National Award. Film review ·

At a time when it is routine for Bollywood to make a completely hash of films inspired by true stories and real-life achievers, 12th Fail is a gentle little film that stays true to its purpose and strikes out hard in all the right directions. The film views the specific facts of one individual's experiences in the context of the general realities of an examination system while often going into granular detailing of the three-stage testing system, and the account assumes the form of a classic, universal and absorbing underdog saga.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra film is the elixir our cynical times need. Vikrant Massey-starrer cleaves close to ground reality, with characters that makes you feel that they've wandered off the street, dishing out life-lessons laced with dollops of inspiration.

    Film review ·

Vikrant Massey has delivered his career best as Manoj, treading carefully between idealism and pretense without overplaying his role even once. '12th Fail' is a must-watch, with a sincerity visible in each frame that keeps the authenticity of the story alive.
  4. KoiMoi

    Film review

Cinema that resonates with the gist and dedication of the people who have risen above the ashes and is made by a filmmaker who understands the nuances of a story, should never be missed. Vikrant Massey surrenders himself to a point where you forget he is an actor enacting a part. It is one of the most nuanced, political, personal, and brave movies of our times.

I found instead in 12th Fail, which should've ideally been titled Restart (its tag-line), a film about the generosity of fellow humans. That no one's really self-made. That it takes a proverbial village (literally, in this case) to script a success story. There is a sattvic quality, or sincerity that emanates from within, in Massey Sahib, hence, that's impossible to miss.
  6. Rediff

    Film review ·

If Vikrant Massey does not win a National Award for this film, it will be unjust to an actor who has given a performance of such unalloyed brilliance. 12th Fail ticks all the boxes of the underdog-to-victor story and still gives it heart-wrenching emotional force.
  7. Times Of India

    Film review ·

12th Fail' is top-class and a must-watch that will leave you impressed and inspired through almost every scene of its 147 minutes. The viewer feels involved in Manoj's success or failure, and the narrative flows easily as it harks back to legends such as APJ Kalam and BR Ambedkar's call to his followers: 'Educate, agitate, organise.
  8. Zee News

    Film review ·

'12th Fail' is a mark of good art. Its beginning, end and every binding scene in between is incredible. The director has tuned his actors so brilliantly, and you just can't forget any one of them.
  9. CNBC-TV18

    Film review ·

At 71, he is young in the way few are, enough to break free from the trappings of his trademark filming style that he has successfully honed over decades to make a movie that's timeless. For struggle cannot be confined to a timeline.
  10. Hindustan Times

    Film review ·

Massey takes the cake for delivering a brilliant performance, easily his career best so far. At 147 minutes, 12th Fail never stretches to a point that it gets boring or preachy. 12th Fail is a must watch to understand not only the hardships and emotions that UPSC students go through, but it also shed light on the overall education in our system.
  11. OnManorama

    Film review ·

Undoubtedly, this is Vikrant Massey's best performance to date. Kudos to the entire cast for supporting him with some of their finest performances. This inspiring journey makes '12th Fail' a must-watch by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
  12. The Hindu

    Film review ·

The tone is a bit didactic and the treatment gets a tad overstated but it is a big-hearted film that hugs you tight with its message of human goodness. Still, this is an important film that deserves your indulgence.
