Om Raut's version of 'Ramayana' will be a series of clunky computer graphics, bathed in Bollywoodese. This beloved epic turned into an actioner reduces it to a two dimensional barrage of little feeling.

A grand Ramayana retelling with real scale but hollow heart and weak VFX.

Critic consensus
Critics are sharply divided on Adipurush, with most leaning toward disappointment despite acknowledging its ambition and scale. A handful found it a passable big-screen entertainer with broad commercial appeal and Prabhas as a draw. However, the majority took issue with the film's visual effects, widely described as cheap, uninspired, and derivative of Western fantasy productions, and faulted it for reducing the Ramayana to a hollow action spectacle that lacks the depth and reverence the source material demands.

Adipurush, a bloated and vacuous cinematic version of a part of the Ramayana, does the epic or its civilisation-defining characters no justice at all. The ambition is mammoth but the imagination that the makers of Adipurush bring to the table is no bigger than the size of the computer screens that have been used to give the film its final shape. Adipurush is full of magic and miracles, but no trick that it rustles up over the three hours that it takes to peddle its wares can offset the consequences of the trivialisation of a great epic.

ADIPURUSH is a well-made entertainer with a big-screen appeal.
Film review
Adipurush is a sincere attempt that gets a tad overwhelmed by its ambition of handling a story of the Ramayana. Ramayana rides high on action over ethos in this super-heroic reboot.

Though Adipurush can be safely deemed as one of Om Raut's biggest works, the film could surely have called for a better visual package. However, it's a job that is moderately done. If not worse. All in all, we can't put a stamp on all the hype that Adipurush has been gathering, but it surely deserves one watch at the theatres. For Prabhas, if nothing else.

Cherry blossoms in Sri Lanka, Hanuman speaking Bombaiya, the mythical Sone Ki Lanka looking darkly Gothic, Raavan looking like a Bollywood dude... this is not modernisation. This is a travesty. The Ramayan is a part of our cultural DNA. It needed faith and humility for a film-maker to present it to a Gen Z audience, not the arrogance of a big budget spectacle and computer imagery.
Film review
The movie's rough computer graphics might eclipse all other considerations since there's so much bad green-screen image-compositing in "Adipurush," and it all looks cheap and uninspired. Your mileage may vary, but slapdash and tacky-looking special effects make the first hour (or more) of "Adipurush" feel interminable.

Om Raut's Adipurush has passion, ambition and scale. What Raut's adaptation of the Ramayana lacks is a sense of wonderment. The derivative visual design borrows from the Avengers productions, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and a host of fantasy fiction works, resulting in a movie that resembles a video game rather than capturing the moral universe of the epic.
