The first half of Jailer is engaging for the most part. Its second half isn't half as riveting. In fact, it is sluggish and all over the place notwithstanding a couple of climactic twists that pack a reasonable punch.

Rajinikanth's star power carries a crowd-pleaser let down by thin writing.

Critic consensus
Critics are broadly divided on 'Jailer', agreeing that Rajinikanth's screen presence and charisma are the film's primary draw, with several noting his performance as a return to form. Nelson Dilipkumar's masala filmmaking instincts and flashes of dark humour earn praise, particularly in the first half. However, a recurring criticism is the weak, predictable writing — with multiple reviewers pointing to plot holes, a sluggish second half, and underdeveloped material beyond the star. The consensus is that the film rewards Rajinikanth's fanbase but offers little outside of his persona.

Film review ·
The alchemy of good masala films appeared to have been forgotten by filmmakers, at least in Tamil cinema, when Nelson Dilipkumar reminded us how it is done with the de facto poster boy of Tamil masala films, Rajinikanth. The ingredient that has been missing of late in making of commercial films is 'respect', and Nelson has that in oodles for this genre. And when he mixes this age-old success formula with his deadpan and dark humour, things get pretty delectable in Jailer.
Film review ·
Jailer is a highly entertaining crowd-pleaser. Nothing path-breaking but it is sure to become an enjoyable delight for the masses.
Film review ·
Jailer is a film that will be successful despite failing the Bechdel test, because it passes on entertainment value with flying colours like many other successful commercial films. One of the most memorable things about Nelson's directorial, Jailer, starring Rajinikanth, is the fact that the superstar doesn't get into a zone where he performs unbelievable action sequences.
Film review ·
'Jailer' is a proper paisa-vasool commercial entertainer with solid performances and good camera work. 'Jailer' is Rajinikanth's return to form, and even at 72, his charisma and style make you scream in theatres, though the story is extremely predictable with several shortcomings.
Film review
Rajinikanth is not a hero anymore; he is a superstar and this film shows him exactly as that.
Film review ·
Nelson gives us the Rajinikanth we treasure in this fresh form of the age-appropriate Tiger Muthu Pandian. But the film keeps us waiting for the real Nelson that we know to stand up—a reinvention of Rajinisms for the new age that occasionally shines through, yet the film doesn't fully embrace Nelson's edge and distinctive voice that makes his work memorable.
Film review ·
If you come to "Jailer" for anything but Rajinikinath, you will probably leave disappointed. Sometimes it's hard to tell if director Nelson Dilipkumar knows what he's doing, either with his star or this movie's volatile mix of tones and styles.
Film review ·
The slickly filmed Jailer has some sharp scenes of crackpot humour and a few quirky types that salvage an increasingly dull homage to Rajinikanth's screen persona. Who can take an avenging hero seriously when the threats are so feeble? A high-wattage star can bring only so much value to an indifferently written movie.
Film review ·
Jailer might be far from perfect, but with the towering presence of Rajinikanth standing tall along with Nelson's fortified writing, this is a commendable comeback for both the actor and filmmaker. It's this seasoned charisma, along with filmmaker Nelson's quirky touches, that make their latest collaboration Jailer an enjoyable entertainer.

Leave logic at home, go for the Rajinism. Director Nelson Dileepkumar and the Superstar offer a film that may have gaping plot holes, but you wouldn't really care. Jailer is an undiluted adrenaline rush for the diehard Rajini fan.
Film review ·
In many ways, Jailer brings Rajinikanth to the fore, yet again, just like how the film Vikram had done for Kamal Haasan. Unlike certain Rajini-centric action films, where the superstar carries the entire film on his shoulders and fights dozens of goons single-handedly, he is ably assisted by his 'old friends' and their aides in Jailer.
