Jessabelle is just another in a long line of scary stories that have been coming out on a nearly weekly basis, and while it may be more inventive than something like ‘Ouija’, it still doesn’t amount to be anything more than a forgettable thriller that will hopefully result in more work for its lead actress. This horror story squanders a charismatic performance from Sarah Snook, as the wheelchair-bound shut-in an old rickety house so decrepit it could only be on the cover of a paperback.

With its subtle scares, Jessabelle starts out really well. It’s the abrupt, illogical ending that spoils the fun. However, if you like unconventional horror films, you can still watch this one on a lonely afternoon.

Do yourself a favour and wait till this one’s out on DVD.

The cheap, crummy style of the scares is also exactly what has ruined the essence of modern horror cinema. When you know what is going to happen in the next scene, there is little you can do but wait for the groan-inducing scare to pass by.

With good locales, a somewhat-decent performance by Sarah Snook and some tense moments, Jessabelle isn’t all that bad. Greg Hedgepath’s sound design is certainly commendable. Watch out for a couple of freaky moments, especially the one with the gruesome shower scene.
