Critic consensus
Critical opinion on Leo is divided, with most reviewers agreeing that Vijay's screen presence is the film's primary draw. Several critics found his performance among his career-best work, and Lokesh Kanagaraj's action and visual craft drew selective praise. However, a recurring complaint is the writing, particularly a weak second half, a poorly developed antagonist, and a failure to meaningfully explore its central premise about the protagonist's identity. A number of critics consider it a step back for Kanagaraj, with the story's predictability and repetitive action undermining its ambitions.

Leo is a good entertainer with interesting twists you wouldn't guess. If you can put aside logistics and logic, you would be able to immerse yourself in this carnage drama where one man rips apart an army of 100 or more burly men.
Film review
Leo sets up as a delight to Thalapathy fans, and Kanagaraj has deliberately played with the conclusion of the movie that leaves the audience in anticipation of a major collaboration in the future.

Although the film began on a powerful note, script-wise, it takes a significant downturn in the second half. While Leo is undoubtedly a feather in Vijay's cap, it is indeed a step back for writer-director Lokesh Kanagaraj.
Film review ·
Despite having an ensemble of actors, Leo is a one-man show. Vijay is terrific in the film, as Parthiban, as well as Leo. While one can guess where the movie is going within half an hour after entering the theatre, Lokesh shines in his 'innovative violence and action sequences'.
Film review ·
Is it a good action film? It is entertaining enough. The most intriguing part about Leo is how the lead character is brilliant representation of human psychology. However, this world of make belief has cracks, and these are ones that can't be ignored.
Film review ·
Leo, an action thriller, is the filmmaker's attempt at going big in terms of vision and scale which is only let down by lethargic writing. Far from roaring, Leo just squeaks past for its few moments of some action sequences and Vijay's terrific screen presence.
Film review ·
Leo rides on a wafer-thin plot – In fact, the storytelling is as linear and predictable as it gets. While the film works due to Thalapathy Vijay's towering presence and performance, the second half is a letdown with a poorly written antagonist and repetitive action sequences that fail to deliver the required punch.
Film review
While the craftiness may be bloody sweet, the writing feels rather bitter. Vijay's performance in emotional scenes evokes absolutely nothing, and the film is ultimately just another edition of Lokesh Kanagaraj's filmography about lawless violent men celebrating badass behavior rather than offering meaningful meditation on violence's consequences.
Film review ·
"Leo," a formulaic but satisfying Indian remake of "A History of Violence," both is and isn't exactly what it looks like. A good part of what makes "Leo" so charming is that it's already so familiar, both for its something-for-everyone mood swings and its pulpy stock plot. If you're watching "Leo," it should be to see Vijay show off in between animal attacks, car flips, and celebrity cameos.

Lokesh's Leo, to much disappointment, derails here, becoming his weakest film to date. It loses out on the whole 'Who is Leo Das and why did he turn against his own people?' question, the pillar on which the entire film rests. Even a stunningly-conceived car chase sequence cannot save this actioner from losing its zeal; the many boring knife fights only dampen it further.
