Critic consensus

What 5 critics are saying

Critics broadly agree that Por Thozhil is one of the stronger Tamil thrillers in recent memory, praising its tightly constructed screenplay and the performances of Sarath Kumar and Ashok Selvan. Several reviewers highlight debutant director Vignesh Raja's ability to sustain tension and surprise across the film's runtime. The most common reservation is a lack of novelty in how the investigation unfolds, with a few critics noting minor structural glitches, though these are generally treated as minor drawbacks rather than serious flaws.

  1. The News Minute

    Film review ·

To make an investigative thriller that has you holding your breath for a good part of the film is therefore quite an accomplishment – and it's especially impressive when it comes from a debut filmmaker. Por Thozhil does come with a 'message' for the audience, but it isn't spelt out in neon as is the case with several Tamil films. It's subtle and allows us to arrive at the realisation instead of drilling it into our brains, and thank god for that.
  2. India Today

    Film review ·

Por Thozhil is one of the most interesting thrillers in recent times. It is a film that deserves to be devoured in theatres. Director Vignesh Raja's Por Thozhil grabs your attention from the first frame and keeps you surprised till the end.
  3. Ottplay

    Film review ·

The film has a tightly-woven screenplay that aids in offering edge-of-the-seat moments, but the manner in which the investigation unfolds doesn't boast of novelty. Por Thozhil is a taut thriller if you can overlook a few glitches.
  4. The Hindu

    Film review ·

Despite minor glitches, Por Thozhil is one of the best thrillers we've had in Tamil in a while. It's an impressive whodunnit with an intriguing plot headlined by brilliant performances from Sarath Kumar and Ashok Selvan.
