The only positive aspect in this extravagant jaunt is the post-credits scene which promises something worth keeping your interest in this franchise. At this point, however, any hopes for this getting better in quality are very low.

Ultimately this is an adequate distraction if your children absolutely need to be shown something on the big screen this week.

You should watch Thor Ragnarok on the biggest screen in your town, and to be able to enjoy the pop fizzy colour palette you should head to a theater playing it in 2D. This is a new standard set for superhero movies, and I wonder how Marvel will top this with the Infinity War movies.

The special effects are all right but in an era where CGI is so commonplace there’s little here that holds your attention. Moreover we’ve seen this stuff before in films like Twister and 2012. The real problem with the film isn’t that it is dumb, it’s that it isn’t nearly dumb enough to warrant a recco. Director Devlin could have gone all out and made a bad movie classic here, but it feels like an opportunity (apart from the ton of resources) has been wasted.
-
There’s an odd sense of misguided chronicling in the film, which is strange considering it’s directed by Stephen Frears who has made rather lovely films like High Fidelity. The lack of irony, or satirical bite from his earlier film The Queen ultimately hurts Victoria and Abdul, more a missed opportunity than a piece of entertainment.
-
The ‘disposable’ nature of the film is ultimately frustrating because this is just another entry in a year dominated by a string of trashy forgettable movies

If Deakins does not finally receive the Oscar for this one it’s time for the Academy to shut down. Gosling is perfectly cast, and you’re better off not knowing anything about the rest of the characters in the film.

Another memorable entertainer from the house of Tom Cruise, Doug Liman…
-
Pedro Pascal is surprise package of this strictly okay film…

The whole globe trotting hero assassin aspect seems more silly than fascinating here — making it feel like a trashy book you grab at an airport and throw it away when you land. Considering the film is based on a series of novels, that may be precisely what the filmmakers were going for — to make a forgettable film.
