Shubha Shetty-Saha's Film Reviews

This film clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously and it doesn’t want you to either, which is kind of nice. A me-too, even if in the form of open admiration, has the danger of being easily forgettable. But this film might just not be, because it does manage to stand on its own two feet at some points.

As you go through this 140 plus minutes of love saga, which gets increasingly irritating, you stop caring if they are together or not, because going by the storyline, it seemed like they didn’t care either.
-
The director creates a charming world that you are reluctant to get out of, even when the film is over. Now that is an achievement.

‘Ek Villain’ is touted as an intense film. It kind of lives up to it. But in its 140 minute duration, it ends up with so much relentless intensity that after a point you start looking for an escape from this heat. This is a classic example of a film that takes itself so seriously that it ends up looking manipulative and largely lacking in genuine emotions and soul. – See more at: http://www.mid-day.com/articles/movie-review-ek-villain/15408191#sthash.OCS6O1vO.dpuf

Silly, irreverent humour is always a welcome change. But braindead, childish (sorry children, don’t roll your eyes yet) pathetic attempt at funny is not. And I think the only original joke is the fact that Ram Kapoor quit his TV career for this film. Ram Kapoor did put in a sincere effort into making whatever he was doing believable but that sight of him in a red bikini overpowered it all.

The basic plot is promising but then it is filled with so many loopholes that one wishes that the writers had concentrated on filling them instead of trying to cram in as many crude “Haryanvi” type of jokes into the script as possible.

At some points, the documentary seems a little contrived with some unnecessary stats being bandied about, perhaps in a bid to make it sensational. Pahuja could have done without it. Otherwise the intention behind the docu seems just right. But having said that, this one’s a superbly gutsy attempt at showing the mirror to reality and such attempts should always be encouraged. Go watch.

A story with great potential, it could have been better. But watch it anyway because its simplicity is beautiful.

Watch this one. It’s total paisa vasool.

Do watch this film as it narrates the sensitive-yet-disturbing story of how human greed and selfishness can wreck lives. It also shows how unfortunately survival in a big city more often than not comes at the cost of moral values.
