Critic consensus

What 7 critics are saying

Critical reception for Clayface is moderately positive, with most reviewers appreciating its departure from conventional superhero storytelling in favour of a character-driven tragedy. Tom Rhys Harries' lead performance and the film's commitment to body horror are frequently cited as strengths, with several critics drawing favourable comparisons to Todd Phillips' Joker. Common criticisms include a predictable and at times clichéd plot, pacing issues particularly in the middle stretch, and weak visual effects. A handful of reviewers felt the film did not fully realise its potential, with one noting it falls short of setting a new benchmark for the genre.

It's a surprisingly winsome outing, with the origin story of the antihero staying close to the dingy, shabby, forgotten parts of Gotham City, and from all that, creating a character you are rooting for till the end. Clayface tends to drag in the three-quarters when the cycle becomes almost a repeat – of Matt killing, repenting, being soothed by Caitlyn, and developing (who would have known?) feelings for her. But Clayface picks up again towards the end as Matt, whose acting was once thought to be so versatile as no one could tell the real him, now really becomes a person he struggles to identify with.

    Film review

Clayface falls short of its potential in places, but the story, the lead performance, and its willingness to take a different approach make it one of the more satisfying entries in the DCU so far. It has its share of problems, particularly in its visual effects and occasional contrivances, but the central character and the performances give it enough substance to rise above those shortcomings.

    Film review

If you can stomach graphic body horror that will leave you squirming in your seat and peeking through your fingers, Clayface promises an exhilarating cinematic experience steeped in tragedy, torment, and pain. Clayface stands out as one of DC's most promising cinematic outings since Todd Phillips' Joker (2019). In a sea of formulaic superhero and supervillain narratives, Clayface goes back to basics, focusing on a man's tragic downfall rather than simply channelling his rage into mindless destruction.

There are enough queasy thrills in Clayface to keep horror fans happy. It's gross. It's gory. But it is also a whole lot of fun.

While the plot feels clichéd and much of the first half is skippable, it is a deeply uncomfortable watch. Does Clayface meet the benchmark? Not really.
  6. The Hindu

    Film review

Clayface works best when leaning into its pulpy heart, as the attempt to make an anti-hero of a villain does not earn its space. Going full body horror is fun, if predictable — we instinctively know who Matt will impersonate next and that bowl of nuts was signaling louder than a lighthouse what was going to happen next.
