Critic Consensus

Critical reception for 'Insidious: Out of the Further' leans mixed-to-negative, with most reviewers acknowledging it as a watchable but unremarkable entry in the long-running franchise. A handful of critics found it an enjoyable, occasionally thrilling horror offering, pointing to creepy monster visuals, solid performances, and effective sound design as relative highlights. However, the majority of criticisms center on the film's over-reliance on familiar franchise mythology and tired horror tropes, with several reviewers finding it uninspired, un-scary, and visually monotonous due to its repetitive aesthetic palette. The consensus suggests the film will appeal primarily to committed franchise fans rather than broader horror audiences.

"It's only so many ways that you can take this story about the Further farther, told as it has been in four films before."

"Insidious: Out of the Further is not the best film in franchise, and not even the best horror film of the year, but it is a solid addition to the franchise, especially if you are interested in the lore and want to meet more of the very interesting creatures that franchise has to offer, along with solid performances and just an entertaining story as well."

"The sound design, especially, is crafted without leaning too heavily on conventional horror cues, and that makes it all the more interesting, and effective."

"Too bad most of “Insidious: Out of the Further” isn’t as loopy or entertaining. Sometimes, sure, but not nearly enough."

"The horror thrills have almost evaporated with the same-old dull mythology that wouldn't be hard to piece together. After a while, the movie's sustained creepiness becomes self-parody, and the script was so underwhelming that you rarely feel the horror."

"Jacob Chase's 'Insidious: Out of the Further,' the sixth entry in the Blumhouse franchise, is depressingly un-scary and uninspired."

"Despite the Blumhouse-Atomic Monster pedigree, you probably shouldn't be walking into the sixth Insidious expecting something as finely calibrated as Obsession or Backrooms. Much of the film is drenched in that familiar silver-blue grading and persistent 'Further Fog', flattening every frame with the same refrigerated gloom."
