Critic consensus

What 9 critics are saying

Critics are divided on Sarkaru Vaari Paata, with the consensus leaning toward disappointment despite occasional entertainment. Mahesh Babu's performance and screen presence are almost universally cited as the film's primary saving grace, with several reviewers noting he carries the film largely on his own. On the downside, critics repeatedly flag weak writing, a formulaic structure, an underdeveloped romantic track, and a second half that turns preachy and overlong in its treatment of the loan crisis subject matter. The result is a commercially oriented drama that offers fleeting entertainment but little substance.

  1. IdleBrain

    Film review

On the whole, Sarkaru Vaari Paata is a film that works on Mahesh Babu's charisma and the core identifiable story idea. The first half of the film is entertaining with a twist at the interval, though the second half should have been handled more convincingly.
  2. The News Minute

    Film review ·

While initially, the story plays out like a romantic-comedy set in the USA, the romance part quickly evaporates and there is a conflict between Mahesh and Samuthirakani. The story writing is poor... Just when you are relieved that this Mahesh Babu film is not a preachy message film involving farmers' plight, director Parasuram brings another twist with an overtly political message.
  3. Cinema Express

    Film review ·

Mahesh Babu, undeniably, puts forth a performance worthy of note but the weak writing doesn't help him. The film is tedious primarily due to its uninteresting romantic plot, and despite having a relevant social issue, the predictability of the narration is a dampener.
  4. India Today

    Film review ·

Director Parasuram Petla's Sarkaru Vaari Paata starring Mahesh Babu, Keerthy Suresh and Samuthirakani follows a done-to-death template. Mahesh Babu single-handedly shoulders the film.
  5. Times Of India

    Film review

Sarkaru Vaari Paata suffers from a lack of focus when it comes to the tone of the film. At the end of it all Sarkaru Vaari Paata remains a half-baked commercial drama you can sit through mostly due to Mahesh and Keerthy's performances.
  6. Firstpost

    Film review ·

The film's writer needs to understand the issue beyond the SparkNotes version so that it has some value and gravity. They also have to be skilful enough not to let its weight sink the whole endeavour. Parasuram has neither. Sarkaru Vaari Paata has nothing new to offer for the rest of us, except for a Mahesh Babu gradually coming to form.
  7. Indian Express

    Film review ·

Director-writer Parasuram expects the audience to cut a lot of slack for the way he narrates the story of Sarkaru Vaari Paata. The biggest compromise he expects us to make is to pay no attention to the film's structural issues, including a sense of time and place. The hero's character feels constantly suspended in mid-air, owing to the mindless continental hopping.
  8. Hindustan Times

    Film review ·

One thing that really works in favour of the film is Mahesh Babu's refreshingly different character. If you overlook the heroine's character, we get a film that pretty much checks all the boxes of a commercial entertainer. Parasuram does manage to keep the film largely entertaining, and even during the slightly sluggish second half, you get moments that hold the film together.
  9. The Hindu

    Film review ·

The thought is hammered through a narrative that is entertaining at first, even though familiar and formulaic, but eventually gets preachy and overdrawn. As Mahi repeatedly harps on the impact of loans on different sections of society, though well-intended, it gets boring.
