Critic consensus

What 8 critics are saying

Critics broadly responded to Wicker as an inventively strange folk-horror fable that earns its oddness through strong performances and genuine emotional intelligence. Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård drew repeated praise for their committed, layered work, while the film's blend of social satire, loneliness, and marriage was widely appreciated as thoughtful rather than gimmicky. Several reviewers noted that the film's deliberately light, unhurried tone is both its defining quality and its occasional weakness, sometimes undercutting emotional impact or resulting in uneven pacing. The craft elements — cinematography, score, and direction — also received specific commendation.

    Film review

The film is a strange and captivating fable about men and women within and without the institution of marriage navigating both all-consuming destructive envy and the urge to forge life-affirming connections even if they come at a price.

Ms Colman is great when she is mooching, but even better when she has a smile lighting up her face. The secret to making us believe in men made of wicker who make wild love to real-life women lies in the actors' complete commitment to their parts. This strange, wondrous fable hits the mark more often than not.

    Film review

It's a smart take from married directors Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer, though occasionally social commentary comes at the expense of a more sprightly tone, and the pacing can be a little inconsistent. Still, they keep their eye on the characters and the love story, and find a way to weave it all together beautifully. It's sexy if not quite as saucy as the internet hoped, and instead succeeds best as a quirky fable with a lot of heart.

    Film review

'Wicker' dares to be different and transforms a bizarre story into a pleasantly refreshing watch. The film is engaging and interesting, cleverly weaving in social satire through its plot, with wonderful performances by the cast that add to the viewing pleasure.

    Film review

Wicker is possibly one of the year's most unexpected cinematic delights. It is a wickedly funny, occasionally unsettling exploration of loneliness, marriage, desire and the expectations people place on one another, anchored by Olivia Colman's wonderfully layered performance and Alexander Skarsgård's surprisingly endearing romantic fantasy.

    Film review

Wicker delivers a non-Disneyfied, distinctly weird fantasy that is alive to grown-up feelings. Beautifully shot by Lol Crawley, with a matching score by Anna Meredith, Wicker is among the most outlandish, and enchanting, odd couple romances in recent memory.
  7. TheFederal

    Film review

Wicker is a breezy, unfussed film that approaches its poignancy with a feather-light touch, and this is both its biggest strength as well as its limitation. It is a romantic drama at its heart, laced with humour and wit, but the same unburdened quality sometimes comes at the cost of the emotional highs.
  8. TheGuardian

    Film review

The spirit of mystery author Shirley Jackson is interestingly revived in this peculiar folk-horror romance, adapted from a 2006 story called The Wicker Husband by British writer Ursula Wills. It's almost funny but not exactly, and almost disturbing but not exactly, occupying a strange and intriguing Venn-diagram overlap between macabre horror and sentimentality.
