These are not movies for adults by any stretch, but younger, and I mean younger, audiences have clearly embraced the adorable puppy search-and-rescue team, so their adult chaperones might as well give in and bring them to a matinee showing. And it must be said that while the material is thoroughly juvenile, the films impart valuable messages to their impressionable viewers.

The film, directed by series creator Jon Favreau, has been cleverly engineered to work as a stand-alone entry even for those who haven't immersed themselves in the streaming Star Wars universe. And yet, it still feels stubbornly small in its relatively inconsequential storyline and themes. Still, it's an entertaining, fast-paced space adventure that benefits immeasurably from the charisma of Pedro Pascal as the bounty hunting Mandalorian Din Djarin and the adorable cuteness of Grogu.
Mortal Kombat II

What's genuinely mystifying about the film incarnations is how boring they are despite the non-stop action, which is competently staged but lacking the kinetic fun of, yes, the John Wick films and its many imitators. The whole thing comes off as low-rent, with underwhelming CGI effects and creature costuming and make-up that pales in comparison to a typical NYC Village Halloween Parade.

Better than its familiar premise would suggest. The computer animation of the verdant environs looks beautiful, and while Jordan and Temple are more than adequate in their appealing vocal turns, it's Morgan who steals the film with his committed and hugely entertaining turn as the fish.
The Sheep Detectives

Despite the (brief) presence of Hugh Jackman and a top-flight voice cast, the movie never achieves the level of magic for which it's desperately straining. The Sheep Detectives never really gels, feeling too dark for younger kids and too silly for discerning adults.

The film is better-looking than it is written, although there are funny take-offs on such things as hip-hop videos and cheesy sports promotional films. The hyperkinetic animation style, which bears no small similarity to Sony's Spider-Verse hits, can be a bit relentless for adult viewers not steadily ingesting sugary substances.

Raimi, in his first foray into horror since 2009's Drag Me to Hell, attacks the material with a joyous ferocity that proves infectious.

The actor's charisma keeps the formulaic movie afloat, while director Collins displays a flair for action scenes with a well-choreographed shoot-out.

The gory set pieces, involving such things as a lawnmower, a garbage truck, and, most spectacularly, an MRI machine, are so cleverly orchestrated that the audience at the preview screening applauded each one as if they were song-and-dance numbers.
